5 Tips for Moving in the Last Minute

This is for all of us who leave everything for the last minute!

Lets not lie about it, moving is a stressful process, especially if you start doing it last minute. Ideally, you should have a month or so to plan it, and a couple of weeks to actually do the move. However we people tend to underestimate things and just leave the moving for the last minute. A week is enough right? It isn’t!

You will consequently be left with the question “how did I end up like this?”. So take a breath and try to relax for second. Even in the last minute moving can be done without going crazy.

All of the Matrix Relocations team already had such experience. Maybe that is why we are all working together now? Let me first share my experience for a minute.

Back in days when I was a college student, usually I moved every year to a new student housing. I never was satisfied with the places for which a payed so much. As just getting started to live by my own and taking care of myself, many new responsibilities risen. Not keeping up with everything, eventually I left the moving at the end of the academic year. It wasn’t even a week. Usually it was a day or two.

This created lots of stress and I had to deal with it. However, along the way of dealing with it for several years I learn how to cope with it. So here are 5 tips for moving last minute.

1. Breath, Relax and Plan!

Usually moving last minute happens for either that you didn’t get notice that a move was going to happen, or you procrastinated and time just vanished. Either way, moving in a week or less can feel really overwhelming, so try to take a deep breath. If you’re in this situation because of your own procrastination, don’t beat yourself up mentally- life is busy, it happens. Honestly, you really don’t have time to reflect on it. Just get to work.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is create plan. If you need to hire movers, this should be the first thing you do. Calling a moving company like us – Matrix Relocations is no shame, we can always arrange the move together. Our moving company offers do-it-yourself removals, where we provide you with everything you need. We can customize your last minute moving however you like to. If you’re not going to be using a professionals moving company, figure out how you intend to transport your items to your new home. You may need to rent a truck, so do it as soon as possible.

2. Get yourself enough supplies

One thing I found the hard way is not buying enough supplies during the packing and moving. In my case I was a student, which meant I was on a tight budget and didn’t want to spend if I was not sure about it. As time is tight for you it’s best not to have multiple trips back and forth to the store to pick up boxes and other packing materials. Do it on one go! If you need any help figuring it out you can always call us for assistance. Being professional movers, we can provide you with an estimate of how much supplies you need. It will be an opportunity for us to promote our packing kits as well. At least you can get a couple of wardrobe boxes so that you can pack your clothes without having to pull them off their hangers and fold them. Overall figure out how much you think you need, and then actually buy more than that.

3. Don’t be shy asking for help

If you’re moving last minute, there is no time to be shy about asking for some extra hands. Ask around family members or even some friends to help you out with the packing and moving. A good idea is to express some gratitude. You can do it both verbally and of course buying some beer and pizza. Even though for me back then they were essentials, if I needed help from my friends. Also if there is just nobody in the moment, contact us and we can try figuring it out. You can at least hire someone to come help you with loading up the moving truck.

4. Just forget about organizing the belongings

The perfect move always consists of well-labeled boxes with similar belongings, which are stacked neatly together. Lets be realistic, for your current situations, its fine not organizing as much. With a last minute move, it’s totally fine to leave the organization out and just do what you can, getting all of your items from one place to another. Throw your dishes in with you pillows and blankets and all those small thingies in your socks. It doesn’t matter, it all gets packed. Of course be sure to securely wrap up your fragile items. You can learn more about our specialty packaging. You may figure out you need such assistance.

5. You are forgetting the details

There’s a lot to be distracted with when moving in a week or less. However be sure to keep in mind the details. These include changing the address with the post office and scheduling the shut off of your electricity, gas, internet, cable, etc. Even though I didn’t had to shut off the utilities, I had to change my address back when I was at college. Being young I really didn’t give it a thought. So after my first moving experience, the year after I had to figure it out the hard way. Not receiving the mail I was so much waiting, I figure out that I will go there and ask the municipality what happened. After waiting in line for a couple of hours I came to the realization that I just didn’t change my address. To be honest, stuff like this can always happen. I can still imagine myself doing it. So if you need any help disabling or connecting your utilities, we at Matrix Relocations have a solution for you.
