Learn the Dos and Don'ts when moving somewhere else

The Dos and Don’ts – When Moving for the First Time

When the time comes to move for the first time, it can be both equally exciting and overwhelming. Most probably you are already wondering how you are going to get everything done, not to mention with what you are going to start. Luckily, we at Matrix Relocations all have been there and we were able to learn a thing or two about on how to move while keeping our calm. For this reason, we will cover the dos and don’ts you need to understand for ensuring your first time moving goes as smooth as possible.

Do the math and figure out how much supplies are needed

Start thinking strategically with the determining of how much supplies you will need before the beginning. This will save you a lot of time and you won’t be making frequent trips back and forth for additional supplies. You need the following:

  • Boxes of various sizes
  • Utility knifes
  • Packing paper
  • Packing table
  • Plastic wrap
  • Air-filled plastic padding
  • Permanent markers

However you can never precisely determine how much supplies you need. Even people that are constantly moving have a thought time estimating how much they will need (especially when it comes to boxes). If you find it stressful and difficult, we can always assist you. If you are thinking about buying the best packing material on the market, you are currently in the right place. Be sure to check our moving supplies shop. We are a moving company that will with pleasure help you determine how much boxes you will need. That way, you can spend less time at the store and more time getting things done.

Don’t be afraid asking for help

Sometimes is hard asking for help, but moving is a big job and every extra set of hands are always helpful. Friends are good helpers. You can assign them small tasks like assembling the boxer or helping wrap up some of your kitchenware. Just be sure not to forget to show some gratitude. We people tend to forget when we are under pressure. Of course you can always consider hiring a moving company and what a coincidence, Matrix Relocations is one.

Do leave some belongings behind

Everybody at one point of their lives have been tempted to just throw everything into the suitcases or in this case the boxes, when moving somewhere. However you need to recognize that this is the long waited opportunity to throw the unnecessary stuff. That is why, leave yourself time to get rid of the things that no longer serve a purpose in your life. Go through everything and sort out the items you can get rid of, into three piles. Consequently they being: donate, recycle, and trash. If you haven’t used it in a year and don’t have an immediate use for it, chances are you can live without it.

Don’t overstuff the boxes

When it comes time to start packing, be cautious of how you arrange items in the boxes. Definitely don’t make any box to overstuffed or heavy, as this can result in damaged items and making the lifting part of the move much more difficult. Pack already-heavy items like books in small boxes instead of mixing them with other items in a medium or large boxes. In terms of valuables or breakables, provide each item with plenty of stuffings and leave room around them in the box. Fill in any gaps with packing paper or bubble wraps, since you don’t want to make stuff  move around the box.

Do label the boxes

Labeling will make your life a whole lot easier when it comes time to unpack. You don’t have to get into the specifics of what’s inside each box when you label, though it can benefit you a lot! Anyways, you should at least note a general location of where items are going, and whether any items in the box are fragile and require caution.

To be honest, really you may want to be a little bit more detailed about what’s in what box so that you don’t end up desperately searching for your bedding at midnight on the move-in day. It take less than a minute labeling in detail a box.

Don’t try to unpack everything right away

There’s no rule that says you have to unpack everything all at once. Even if it’s nice to be fully settled in as soon as possible, you can easily burn out if you try to do everything at once. Unlike the packing, there’s no pressure on when you have to unpack. Give yourself a small break and just aim to do a little here and there, and take the steps you need to unpack with continuous progress.

If you plan ahead and go into it with the positive attitude, your first move can actually be a rather positive experience. Visit our blog page for more interesting content like this one.
