In the world of relocation, it’s almost always better to have time on your side. Packing up an entire household’s worth of goods and transporting them to a new home is something that can be achieved in hours, but that almost always goes more smoothly when you have time to prep and prepare.

Ideally, you will have at least two months’ notice to schedule your move. This will give us enough time to find an opening in our moving list (especially if you plan on moving during the busy summer months) and ensure that we can arrange everything to your satisfaction. After all, we’ll need to send out someone to estimate the weight/cost of your belongings, plan for specialty packing materials, set up valuation coverage, and schedule the move. Much of this can be done over the phone, but we will need to see your home in person to make the initial estimate.

These two months are also important for your peace of mind. Not only will you need to make arrangements for the sale/purchase of your home, but there are dozens of tasks that go into a successful move: purging unnecessary belongings, holding a garage sale, filling out change of address forms, transitioning to a new job, and, if you’ll be doing the packing yourself, picking up moving supplies and starting to box things up. In fact, if you lay out a schedule of all the things you’ll need to get done, two months will hardly seem like enough time!

Advance Planning

If you know that you’ll be moving soon but aren’t yet sure of the date, we suggest you get a moving estimate now. This will give you a good idea of what you can expect from your move, including costs and general timelines. You can also get a feeling for how much time you’ll have to book. Because we don’t require you to sign up for anything at the time of the estimate, you’ll have some wiggle room before you need that contract.

The months of May through October are our busy season, so try to plan as much ahead as possible during this time frame. During the slower months, you may be able to book a moving van with as little as two weeks to spare.

If time is too tight to make this work, also bear in mind that we offer portable and temporary storage options. Sometimes, packing everything up and putting on hold for a few months while you get your affairs settled is the best way to tackle any uncertainties and ensure that you—and your items—get where you need to be.
