Why Does the Agent Need to Come to My House to Provide an Estimate?

Have you ever wondered why we need to do an in person estimate for a move? Find out why!

We get it—we really do. In our age of ordering everything online and two-day deliveries, making an appointment for someone to come by and physically survey your home’s contents can be a hassle. However, this standard procedure for the moving industry has long been the way of doing things…and for good reason. Unless a moving company is willing to send an agent to your home to provide a free estimate for delivery, they’re probably not a very reputable business.

The Physical Survey

Almost all moving costs are calculated based on weight. The amount of belongings you own will dictate how much time it will take to pack up and load, how much fuel will be consumed in transit, and how difficult the unloading process will be. Although we won’t know for sure how much your home’s contents weigh until we load up and get our truck on a scale, a physical survey of your house is the next best thing. Our agents have years of experience making these kinds of estimates, so we’ve become pretty good at being able to provide an accurate estimate of your total costs.

Remember, too, that no two homes are the same, so the personal touch is highly necessary to get an accurate estimate. It’s not enough to say you have five rooms: one five-room home might be full of heavy, ornate furniture and books, while another might be free of clutter and filled mostly with portable, IKEA-style furniture. Although the houses might be identical from the outside, the costs for moving the contents will be drastically different.

The Personal Touch

We also firmly believe that sending an agent out to talk to you is the best way to ensure we’re all on the same page moving forward. Few things are scarier than trusting everything you own to the hands of a virtual stranger, which is why making this personal connection is important.

During this initial visit, we’ll get to know you and answer any questions you might have about the moving process. Although your moving agent won’t be present on the actual day of the move, they will be your point of contact when you need information on dates and paperwork. By establishing this relationship now, we can all work better together moving forward.

A Reputable Company

Any moving company that’s willing to provide you with an estimate without first surveying your home is a red flag. Not only will they be unable to accurately provide the final costs, but they could be running a scam.

Always ensure that your long distance moving company is willing to come out in person and that they have the appropriate licensing in place. Your belongings are worth protecting, and they’re worth the extra steps necessary to move them the right way.
