How Early Do I Need to Start Planning My Move?

The good news is that most of the time, moving is not a last minute decision. Most people know when a move is coming, either because they’re looking for a new home, have a lease that is ending, or are moving around job or school start dates.  Realistically, most people know that they’ll be moving two to three months before their actual move date.  But when you need to start planning depends on your circumstances.

How much stuff do you have? The move of a single person with a studio’s worth of furniture and belongings will take a lot less time to plan, pack and accomplish than a family of five with a four bedroom house.

How involved is your move? Do you need pickup from multiple locations? Or will your belongings need to be stored while your new home is finalized? Will you utilize packing and cleaning services? The more variables your move has, the earlier you should start.

When are you moving?  If you’re moving in the summer, which is the busy season for moves, you’ll need to schedule a moving truck and crew further out than if you’re moving at the end of October.  This will help ensure that you get the dates you want.

But as a rough guideline, it’s best to have your move dates booked six to eight weeks out, giving you time to accomplish other important moving tasks like sorting your belongings, getting rid of things you no longer want or need, packing if you choose to do your own, as well as getting utilities set up and learning about your new town. In the summer, you may want to start earlier, at ten to eight weeks out. It may be possible to organize a move in four weeks if you don’t have a lot of stuff, your move is straightforward, and you’re not moving during the summer. It will be very difficult for most families to plan, organize and complete a move in less than a month.
