Our moving dictionary is a great tool to help you throughout your relocation. When you are launching a move you need to know exactly what you receive and sign in order to be fully protected and to know your responsibilities and rights. Better informed means better protected.

Moving Dictionary for Your Education

Additional Services
These are services like packing, unpacking, large, valuable, uncommon objects for moving that you have requested or that are necessary because of special circumstances or requirements. All these services are charged additionally.

Advanced Charges
These are charges for services that are not carried out by the mover but by a third party – professional, craftsman, etc. These charges are paid for by the mover and added to your bill.

Agent
Agent is a local representative of the moving company. This person can be assigned as booking, origin, destination or transport agent.

Appliances Service
This is the service of preparation of your electrical appliances for the move (turning off, draining, packing, etc.).

Bill of Lading
This is the receipt you receive for your goods and the contract for the transportation. You should carefully read and understand the bill of landing before signing it. If there is something that you do not agree with, do not sign the Bill of Lading before you make sure it is correct. It is also important to keep your copy of the bill, because this is an important document.

Binding/Non-Binding Estimate
The binding estimate is an advance agreement that ensures the total cost of the move based on the services requested and shown on the estimate. The non-binding estimate is an approximate calculation of the move based on the expected weight of the shipment and the services requested. The final charges are based on the actual weight of the shipment and the services carried out during the move.

Booking Agent
This is the person who registers your move. A booking agent is not always located at or near the origin or destination of the move.

Carrier
This is the mover that transports your shipment.

Change Order
This is a form used to change the costs indicated on the original estimate due to change of the amount of items to be shipped or services requested or canceled by the customer.

C.O.D.
This is a transportation of a private shipment which requires payment to be done at the time of delivery.

Destination Agent
This is an agent who is located near your destination who provides services and information at the end of the move.

Estimate
The estimate is a calculation including transport charges and costs for any additional services requested. It also includes an estimation of the weight of the shipment.

Expedited Service
This is an agreement between the mover and the customer that sets an exact date for the transportation to be made in exchange for the charges based on a higher minimum weight of the shipment.

Flight Charge
This is an extra charge for carrying items up or down the stairs at the origin or destination location.

Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service
This is a premium service that is based on fixed dates for loading and unloading and often requires minimum weight of the shipment. In case the dates are delayed, the mover provides reimbursement.

Hauling Agent
The owner of the van assigned by the mover to transport your possessions.

High Value Articles
These are items that worth more than $100 per pound. Shipment of high value articles is subject to additional services and disclosures with the mover in order to protect the items during the move.

Inventory
This is a detail description of the items to be shipped that shows their number and exact condition at loading and unloading of the shipment.

Line haul Charges
These are additional charges for the vehicle transportation for your part of the move. These charges are added to the additional service charges.

Long Carry
An additional charge that occurs in case of excessive distances between the mover’s vehicle and your home.

Order for Service
This is the document that authorizes the mover to transport your belonging.

Origin Agent
Agent at your origin destination that is responsible for performing packing and preparing all the necessary documentation.

Peak Season Rates
Higher charges for services that are applied during the summer months.

Personal Moving Adviser
Moving company representative providing the customer with an estimate of the cost of the move and responsible for answering all questions that the customer has regarding the moving process.

Pickup and Delivery Charges
Transportation charges applied separately for transporting your shipment between the storage warehouse and your residence.

Registration Number
This is the identification number of your shipment. You can find it in the upper right corner of the Order for Service and the Bill of Lading.

Shuttle Service
Additional service providing a smaller vehicle to residences that are not accessible to the moving company’s normal equipment.

Storage In Transit
Non permanent storage for your belongings pending further transportation. Useful when your new home is still not ready to occupy. This is an additional service that may not exceed a total of 90 days of storage.

Tracking Number
The number used for identification and tracking of your shipment.

Valuation
The valuation charge applies when the mover is taking a greater degree of liability than that provided for in the base transportation charges. This is also known as Full Value Protection.

Van Foreman
This is the driver of the van who is responsible for loading, transporting, and unloading the shipment.

Warehouse Handling
This is as additional charge that applies when the customer uses Storage In Transit service. It is designed to compensate the mover for the placement and removal of items within the warehouse.
