Start packing guestrooms first. Ask your children to set aside a few toys and books they want to take with them and start packing the rest in cartons. Use color stickers to mark the boxes with the children’s belongings. This will allow them to recognize their boxes once they are unloaded at the final destination.

Clothes

Use wardrobe cartons to pack hanging clothing from closets. You can purchase some of these cartons from your moving company. If you do not use wardrobe cartons, remove hangers, fold the clothes and put them in a suitcase or a carton which is lined with clean paper.

We recommend to take any furs you have with you, rather than move them in the van, because heat or humidity could damage them.

Shoes

Leave footwear in shoe boxes and place several boxes in a larger carton. You can also pack shoes by wrapping them individually and then in pairs. Pack only shoes in one carton. Do not pack heavy items on top of shoes. Cushion them well do avoid damage to heels or ornaments.

Hats

Use hatboxes for hats or stuff the crown of each hat with with crushed paper and wrap the hat loosely with tissue paper. Place the hats in carton lined with clean paper. Put heavier hats at the bottom. Use this carton for hats only. Label the carton “Fragile”.

Jewelry

Do not pack fine jewelry and other valuables with your household goods. Move them with you. Also, you might consider hiring an armored vehicle if you have high-valuable items that you cannot take with you.

Toiletries

Hairsprays, deodorants and other aerosol cans should be disposed of if you don’t want to carry them with you. Wrap bottles and shut them well to avoid leakage. Pack them in small cartoons.

Linens and Towels

Pack blankets, sheets, tablecloths, towels, pillowcases and other linens in large plastic bags or in a carton lined with clean paper.
Consider linens and bedding as cushioning or padding for other items.

Mattresses

Pack mattresses in special cartons for added strength and cleanliness.

Pillows

Place pillows in drawers or pack them in cartons. They can also be used as padding for other items.

Bed Frames

Dismantle any bed frames and you will have one less thing to worry about on moving day.

Mirrors

Pack glass mirrors in special mirror cartons. If they are especially heavy we recommend crating them.

Curtains and Draperies

Fold curtains and draperies and put them in cartons lined with clean paper or plastic wrap.

Rugs

We recommend you to have your rugs professionally cleaned before your move – you’ll get them back from the cleaners wrapped, rolled and ready for shipping.
